Happy to introduce this month’s yogi in our Curvy Seven feature! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story? Well, the first time I tried it was with one of those awful yoga-as-a-workout VHS tapes that my college roommate had. We did it a few times together, but it entirely missed the point of body love and acceptance. But it did spark a lot of inside jokes (our favorite move: Balancing stick…with reciprocal arms). I actually came to yoga via, of all things, a blog I read for business-y advice. I was reading Havi’s site (waaaay back in 2008!), and she referred to yoga as the art of getting to know yourself. And

Happy to introduce this month’s yogi in our Curvy Seven feature! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story? In the early 1970s, Lilias, Yoga and You was on public television at 6 a.m.  That’s the channel I was allowed to watch, as a small child, when I woke up earlier than my parents. I’d do yoga and eat Fruity Pebbles cereal out of the box until my parents awoke.  She had very long hair, braided over to one side and she looked so wholesome in a leotard and tights. I didn’t return to yoga until 1991 when my son was small and my low back “went out.”  I was a sore hobbling

So excited for you to meet this month’s yogi in our Curvy Seven feature! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story? A friend invited me to my first yoga class in 2010. When she told me the location of the studio, I literally “rolled” my eyes. It was located inside a swanky upscale studio. Nonetheless, I was committed to showing up. Everything about the yoga studio was foreign to me—from the cubby hole storage area where class attendees disrobed to collecting mats and blocks before class—it was like entering a strange world. I noticed quite quickly that I was the only plus-sized woman in the class but as a black, female, plus-sized

So excited for you to meet this month’s yogi! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story? The yoga studio was literally across the street from my apartment building.  I signed up for immersion (5 early mornings a week) and more mornings than not, I rolled out of bed and into yoga.   Why did this stick when at other times it didn’t? It was a time in my life where I was taking a leap, creating a business that expresses a deep, albeit vulnerable, belief in the right for all women to rid themselves of the bully of a dieting mind and live wholeheartedly in the bodies they have…and I was excited, anxious

So excited for you to meet this month’s yogi! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story?       Oh, wow. So, this is going to shed light on the path I took to become who I am today but I’m going share it because I feel like our journeys are important. As some of you may know, I’m a feminist body-positive coach and activist, and I work particularly hard to help fat women know that they have as much right to cultural acceptance, respect and love as anyone else.  That said, I began practicing yoga about 15 years ago when I was living at Structure House, which is a weight-loss facility for

So excited for you to meet this month’s yogi! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story?          I used to have an “exclusive” view of yoga. I would see yoga in media and health publications and only see one consistent type of person: slim, Caucasian, wealthy females. My concept of yoga was that it was something that rich, affluent, slender women did for socializing and relaxing. I never, ever imagined myself doing yoga. However, about two years ago I was introduced to the Curvy Yoga website by my life coach, Akilah Richards. She knew that I was beginning to embrace a holistically healthy lifestyle and wanted to provide me with body

So excited for you to meet this month’s yogi! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story? This could be a long drawn out story, but I’ll keep it simple. I had anxiety. It was bad. I found yoga. It helped. A lot! What I loved about the style I found was it didn’t require me to do or be anything other than myself.  I didn’t have to go out and gather any special clothes or supplies, in fact for the first three months I didn’t even practice with a yoga mat. 2. What pose do you love?  Loathe? First, I’ll say that I don’t practice all the poses out there (because that

So excited for you to meet this month’s yogi! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story? I was 23 years old. I’d just graduated from university and wanted some adventure. As fate would have it, I landed a job in Hong Kong for at least the following six months.  I packed up my bags, reluctantly kissed my boyfriend (now Husband) and family good-bye and set off on my adventure. My experience in Hong Kong was completely life changing in the sense that I was completely on my own, I didn’t know anyone, and no one knew me. I felt like things were changing but wasn’t sure how. I had no idea what I wanted

So excited for you to meet this month’s yogi! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story? Yoga came into my life when I needed it the most.  I was pregnant with my daughter and was suffering from grief and stress due to the loss of a loved one in the 9/11 Tragedy.  It had been some time since we connected and a huge part of my stress was guilt.  I had officially moved from New York in 1995, and I admittedly didn’t stay in contact with loved ones as much as I should have.  I was so focused on working to make the ends meet that I didn’t really take a lot

So excited for you to meet this month’s yogi! To see everyone who has been interviewed, please click here. 1. What’s your yoga origin story? I started yoga out of a personal journey to get comfortable with things that don’t come naturally to me. Before I started, I really thought yoga was all about being able to bend yourself into a pretzel. Since I am perhaps the least bendy person on the planet, yoga seemed like something I was especially unsuited for – and who wants to do things they suck at! But if I’m being honest, I also stayed away from yoga because I felt scared of being judged. I’ve always been an athlete, and I’ve always felt comfortable in
