Meet My New Book!

I started Curvy Yoga in 2009 because I’d felt alone in my practice for over ten years. Deep down, though, I knew I wasn’t — not really. I just knew in my bones that I couldn’t possibly be the only curvy person who wanted to practice yoga in a way that worked for her body, the only person who wanted to practice in a body affirming way to build connection with her body.

Sometimes these days people ask me what my grand vision was at that time, but I truly didn’t have one. I set out to have a conversation and see if I could find anyone else who was interested in finding a different way to practice. I thought I could surely find a handful of people and that we’d all benefit by connecting with each other.

Turns out, there are a lot more than a handful of us out there.

Curvy Yoga has grown into what it is today because of you. Plain and simple. It’s because of your connections with me and each other, your requests for resources, your questions, and all of our conversations that we’re here together.

When I first had the idea to write this book back in 2012, I wasn’t sure if I should do it. I thought to myself, “Does the world really need another yoga book?”

And then I realized that I didn’t actually want to write another yoga book.

I wanted to write a book about what it’s like to connect with your body in a kind way (especially if your pattern has more often been the opposite of that).

I wanted to write a book about how freeing it is to spend more of your time living in your body rather than thinking about it (especially what others think about it).

I wanted to write a book about how the idea of loving your body is all well and good — but that it can only stay an idea unless you have a way to put it into practice (especially a regular, doable way).

I wanted to write a book about how yoga is the best way I know how to do that (especially if you have no idea how to get started).

And I wanted to write a book about how you can absolutely make yoga poses work for your body (especially if you never thought that would be possible).

What You’ll Find Inside

So that’s what you’ll find in the pages of my book. In the book, I’m introducing a new concept I’ve been working on the past couple years called Curvy Yoga Practice. It’s a four-part process that starts on your yoga mat then can journey with you off it. Curvy Yoga Practice is the culmination of everything I’ve learned about how yoga works as a tool for body acceptance, and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you!

Throughout the book (which is gorgeous throughout — just wait until you see it!), I share the whys and how-tos of Curvy Yoga Practice, interspersed with (hilarious and poignant) examples from my own life. The Appendix includes common curvy pose options (with photos and descriptions). I focused on key poses that show up in many yoga classes and also included notes about how you can apply the curvy tools to similar poses so you can use this info to practice comfortably in any yoga class.
