Do you want a yoga practice that makes you feel better both in and about your body?
Curvy Yoga Studio is where it all comes together: practices that fit your body, life + schedule (not the other way around)
Have you thought any of this?
(I know I have!)
I don’t think my body is right for yoga.
Maybe I could have done it if/when I was thinner, younger, more fit/flexible, but not now.
I’m not disciplined enough to practice yoga.
I’ve tried every trick in the book and I can’t possibly do one more month-long “challenge.”
I want to trust my body.
But I have no idea how, and I’m not entirely sure it’s a good idea.
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone!
And this is exactly why Curvy Yoga Studio is here.
An embodied approach to yoga that prioritizes what you feel + need so that you can, too.
We support you to:
Develop a sustainable movement practice that meets you in this season of your body + life
Build + deepen your ability to listen to your body off the mat by first practicing on the mat
Enjoy movement and your body through a gentle, kind approach that always returns you to your own experience and knowing

member love
This is for you if:
You want lots of pose options so you can make the practice work for you, including information on how to use a variety of yoga props (tools) to make poses more accessible.
You’re interested in yoga as one way to listen to your body. Invitations toward embodiment, or being present in your body, through opportunities to notice what you’re feeling are what you’re here for.
You want examples and love for moving your belly, making space for your bum, and avoiding death-by-chest-smoosh in poses.
You want to move intentionally, listening for what’s needed while not overriding your body (because if you’re anything like most of us, you may already do that more than you want in everyday life).
This isn’t for you if:
You’re wanting to perfect a particular yoga pose.
You’re not interested in listening to your body and only want a workout.
You want to be told exactly what to do with no room for what your body needs.
You want your yoga practice to move really fast no matter what.

This is exactly why we offer lots of options in our practices! But if you want or need more personal advice, every member is invited to fill out our “personalized video collection” form. You’ll tell me what you’re looking for (and what you’re not), and I’ll pull together a list of suggested practices chosen just for you!

We have one live class each month, and they usually happen on a weekend day. I alternate days and times each month to try to meet a variety of different time zones. I know no time works for everyone, though, so recordings are always provided.

All you really need is a yoga mat, and you can make do without that as long as your floors aren’t slippery. Some of our practices incorporate various yoga props (like yoga blocks, a yoga strap, or a bolster), but we have a video that shows you what you can use from around your house instead if you don’t have those.
-
Whatever is most comfortable for you! You certainly don’t need to buy anything new. Anything comfortable that moves with you will work.
-
You are so not alone in this! In my experience, it’s an ongoing conversation for every practitioner (and also something we talk about all the time in the Studio). We have a variety of types of scaffolding to support you from daily suggested practices to the ability to make your own playlist to monthly themes and more.

The truth is that everyone’s body has changed and will continue to. But it can definitely be challenging when it feels like you used to be able to do something that is no longer available or is available in a different way than you’re used to. This is why our practices are designed to meet you where you are in the moment -- because sometimes what used to work needs to be updated to best support you now.

Hi, I’m Anna!
Founder of Curvy Yoga
I started practicing yoga in 1999 on a VHS tape in my college dorm room. By that point I’d already developed a relationship (if you can call it that) with movement/exercise that was punishing at best, cruel at worst. The only reason I even gave yoga a try is because I learned about it through practicing biofeedback for what were then already chronic migraines.
Though the instructions rarely worked for my body, there was something about it that kept me coming back. Part of that was, of course, Savasana (the relaxation at the end of class). But from my perspective now, what I can see is that yoga was helping me slowly build a road back to my body that had been torn apart by diet culture, trauma, and chronic pain.
At one point I tallied up the number of diets I’d been on and got 65 different ones (many of which I did more than once) -- and those are just the ones I remember. Depending on your experience, that might sound like a lot or a little. But what it did for me in that moment was make it abundantly clear that I didn’t need a 66th. What I needed was a whole new way to relate to my body.
So I began a journey into body acceptance, and along the way I realized how much yoga had paved my path not only to getting there but also to continuing. Because yoga is where I first learned how to feel my feet on the ground (after thinking yoga teachers were speaking metaphorically when they said that). And yoga is where I got to feel my body move not for anything besides how good it can feel to move when you do it in a way that works for your body and isn’t about shaming you into needing a new one.
About ten years into my yoga practice, when I had some body acceptance practice under my belt, a thought finally occurred to me: “What if my body isn’t the problem? What if the problem is just that teachers haven’t been taught how to teach bodies like mine?” That thought is what made me commit to yoga teacher training (even though I very nearly drove out of the parking lot before my application interview).
I started Curvy Yoga in 2010 because I figured I couldn’t be the only person on the face of this earth who wanted to practice yoga in a way that worked for curvy bodies (and, it turns out, so many more) and that left you feeling better about your body, not worse. And it turned out that I was right: I was far from alone and we’ve been making this space together ever since. If you’ve been nodding your head along to any of this, or if something in you feels curious, I’d love to have you with us!
